Common Questions about New Roofs - FAQs
What type of shingles should I use?
There are several factors that go into choosing the type of roofing you may want for your new roof. If cost is a factor then you are more limited. If style is more of a factor, then money better not be an issue for you. In the end, it really depends on the structure of your home, the type of roof you already have (i.e. flat roof or pitched roof), and your budget. This answer only relates to pitched roofs. So let's look at the options available to you.
New roof option 1: Tiles
If you have a conventional (pitched roof) or a more modern steep-sloped roof, tiles may be your best bet. In Arizona tiled roofs are considered high end and look stunning on almost any home. When it comes to the type of tiles, you may want to consider clay or slate. The biggest advantage to clay or slate tiles is their longevity. When properly installed, they will literally last a life time. Of course cost may be an issue, but more than that is their weight. You'll need to have the proper infrastructure in order to bear the weight.
New roof option 2: Wooden shingles
Because of the high winds that can beat up on your roof, cedar is a good choice for a new roof. Since they don't bend they can withstand a nasty hailstorm or strong winds much better than asphalt. You can also get imitation cedar that is not only durable but from ground level they look exactly like the real thing.
New roof option 3: Asphalt shingles
The most commonly used material for a new roof is asphalt because they are easy to install and are very affordable. Additionally, they come in a large variety of colors to match your color choice.
New roof option 4: Metal
One of the greatest advantages of using metal roofing is that they weigh less than all the other options. You can get metal roofing as painted aluminum, steel, copper, or stainless steel. The last two are very pricey and are usually only found on homes of the very wealthy. Of the four mentioned, aluminum stands out as the top choice because it doesn't rust and muffles the sound of rainfall.
